# Pistomechanics for forecasters: a primer on interventions This primer states how pistomechanics, as published at pistomechanics.org, describes belief and belief change, and what it implies for studies of placebo, open-label placebo, nocebo, hypnosis, psychedelics (psilocybin, MDMA), mindset interventions, persuasion, and sleep and memory reactivation. It uses the framework's vocabulary and defines each term at first use. Every substantive statement carries the claim_id(s) in `data/claims.csv` it rests on. Where the site says nothing specific about an intervention, the primer says so and applies the general mechanics, citing the general claims. The registry grades claims by level: 1 = belief changes what is sampled, 2 = how input is interpreted, 3 = what is perceived or felt (pain, symptoms), 4 = the body or the world beyond perception. Level 3 and 4 claims are the ones that reach symptom and physiology outcomes. --- ## 1. The model in brief ### 1.1 The pipeline Belief is treated as an involuntary biological system: "nobody decides to digest, and nobody decides to mean" [PM-0045]. A **signal** is first **rendered**, run as felt sensation before anything is decided [PM-0040], then **priced**, given a weight before the thought finishes [PM-0041]. The priced unit is a **mana**. Manas feed beliefs, beliefs compose identity, identity drives action: signal → render → mana → belief → identity → action [PM-0043, PM-0044, PM-0985]. Most signals pass as noise; only those that are read become manas [PM-0556], and the reading is done by the identity already installed [PM-0557]. A **belief** is an **account**: a ledger where manas of one kind collect, its strength the balance [PM-0057]. Physically the balance is connection strength [PM-0058], and what answers when identity is consulted is "the strongly potentiated plus the recently fired" [PM-0059, PM-0060]. Entries become structure by repeated booking [PM-0061]; the fixed is "written in tissue, which is slower to change, not impossible" [PM-0062]. An argument is one small deposit, so beliefs "are moved by experience and barely moved by argument" [PM-0056]. **Identity** is the load-bearing set of beliefs held strongly enough to act from without deciding again [PM-0047]. The meaning system fails in three shapes: the **indifference collapse** (nothing weighs more than anything; the flatness of depression) [PM-0048], the **chaos collapse** (everything weighs at once) [PM-0049, PM-0824], and the **dependence collapse** (standing only on structure operated from outside) [PM-0050]. ### 1.2 Layers of belief Deeper beliefs override shallower ones [PM-0078]; depth is potentiation, age, and how many other accounts are wired through a belief [PM-0079]. Four layers [PM-0030]: - **Opinions**: changed without much trouble [PM-0080]; a bad experience or a friend's tip overwrites them [PM-0956]. - **Cultural programming**: felt as common sense [PM-0081]; needs sustained pressure or crisis to shift [PM-0958, PM-0973]. - **Identity and worldview**: formed early, through experience rather than instruction [PM-0083]; they "don't respond to evidence because they were never formed by evidence" [PM-0085]. - **Perception**: colour, depth and the filled-in blind spot are constructions [PM-0086]; what is perceived depends on beliefs installed at the rendering layer [PM-1286]. The deeper the layer, the harder to change and the more it controls [PM-0089, PM-1077], and the less visible it is to its holder [PM-0955]. Argument can modify an opinion but not an identity-level conviction; for that "you need an altered state, prolonged immersion, or a crisis" [PM-1075, PM-1076]. ### 1.3 The compatibility check Each deeper stratum audits the layers above, and "the audit is not a door" [PM-0932]. Because comprehension entails acceptance, a contradicting belief gets in; the deeper layer then files against it every morning until it is outweighed [PM-0933, PM-0135], experienced as the belief "just not sticking" [PM-0934, PM-0216]. "The affirmation is never refused; it is outspent" [PM-0939, PM-0136]. The existing beliefs define what can be written and what it costs [PM-0218, PM-0223]. The check is a price, not a verdict: "a line the day rarely contradicts installs and holds, while a line contradicted every morning has to buy its ground in daylight" [PM-0137]. A rarely contradicted belief begins pulling behaviour before it is true [PM-0936, PM-0269]; a daily-contradicted one is won only by producing evidence faster than the filing [PM-0937, PM-0270]. Without the check, "you would be maximally suggestible" [PM-0950]. ### 1.4 How a mana is priced **Mana value = attention × previously installed value × perceived collective appraisal** [PM-0090]. The accounting "has no clock": ten years of distracted repetitions book almost nothing, one saturated hour books a fortune, "a single ceremony can outweigh a season" [PM-0092, PM-0093]. The believer "books renders, never provenance" [PM-0094]. Renders come from **occurrence** (the senses), **retrieval** (each retrieval re-books the entry) [PM-0095], and **simulation** (imagination, which cannot exceed stored material) [PM-0096, PM-0097]. The dials on this formula: - **Repetition** sets frequency, "impact's installment plan" [PM-0102, PM-0103]. Frequency is experienced as recency: "a hundred stale repetitions lose to one fresh one" [PM-0104]. "Repetition doesn't persuade. It installs" [PM-0106]. - **Emotion** sets impact: arousal seizes attention and fixes the entry afterward [PM-0107, PM-0109]. "Terror and ecstasy both write deep, mild approval and mild dislike both write shallow" [PM-0110, PM-0601]. - **The body** is a render source; "the body leads and the mind justifies" [PM-0113, PM-0114, PM-0115]. - **Language** shapes which renders come easily and which beliefs form naturally [PM-0116]; "a sentence understood is a sentence partially run" [PM-0101]. - **Other people** set the appraisal multiplier: about a third of Asch's subjects went along with a wrong group, and some reported seeing what the group saw [PM-0120, PM-0121]; like and share counts act as "a synthetic Asch group" [PM-0122]. - **Aesthetics and authority** set the gate [PM-0123, PM-0125]. A large prediction error is a large update: the reversal outweighs the confirmation [PM-0602]. Threat "reads fastest and weighs heaviest" [PM-0585]. ### 1.5 The gate and the critical faculty The **knower**, the conscious interface, guards the input as the **critical faculty**, with attention as its instrument [PM-0075]. It "evaluates propositions and rejects most of them. Nothing installs while it holds the door" [PM-0224]; every installation "came through a backdoor" [PM-0225]. When it is suspended, "beliefs write to deeper layers with greatly reduced resistance" [PM-0023, PM-0369]. To understand a statement the mind first runs it as true; rejection is a second, effortful step [PM-0127, PM-0267]. Crossing auditor-on-duty with attention gives four states: - **Attentive and audited**, "the normal tax": slow [PM-0128]. - **Inattentive and unaudited**, "the drip": nearly weightless, works only by volume [PM-0129]; single hidden frames book almost nothing [PM-0130]. - **Attention captured, audit absorbed**, "the ambush": a message rides in on an arousing scene [PM-0131]. - **Attention available, auditor offline**, "the installer's quadrant": the thresholds of sleep, and childhood [PM-0132, PM-0133]; at the waking threshold "an adult's fidelity can write at a child's amplitude" [PM-0134]. The **backdoors**: theta states at the sleep-wake threshold [PM-0226], group rapport [PM-0228], musical trance [PM-0230], ecstasy [PM-0231], authority [PM-0232], aesthetics [PM-0233], emotional shock ("a one-pass write") [PM-0234, PM-0235], and repetition [PM-0236]. Authority disarms the guard: the brain recognises a dominant node in the white coat and suspends its audit [PM-0125, PM-0232], and one sentence books differently from a stranger and a professor [PM-0124]. Trust "disarms the critical faculty before the proposition arrives" [PM-0361, PM-0360]. Two doors at once is strongest [PM-0126]. Argument is first-order change that belief systems metabolise; each backdoor is second-order, changing the context of the write [PM-0238, PM-0240]. ### 1.6 Emanators, receivers, the Prover An **emanator** is a sender whose signal takes as a mana; a **receiver** takes it [PM-0033, PM-0162]. The same signal makes a different mana in each receiver [PM-0152]. The deepest operations forge the return address as the receiver's own, so the installation feels like one's own thinking [PM-0154, PM-0252]; conclusions the receiver authors are not audited [PM-0630, PM-0811]. Once installed, a belief defends itself through the **Prover**: "whatever the Thinker thinks, the Prover proves" [PM-0355]. Ambiguous signals are read as confirmation [PM-0159], memory is read back until "a convert finds his whole life pointing to here" [PM-0160], and attention and behaviour turn toward confirming evidence [PM-0279]. Changing the belief changes what the same world appears to prove [PM-0161]. For outcome measurement this means a participant's retrospective reports are produced by whichever belief is currently installed, and "memory takes dictation from the incumbent" [PM-0314]. ### 1.7 The installation sequence Five stages in fixed order, operated or not [PM-0215, PM-0406]: 1. **Define.** Existing beliefs define what can be written [PM-0218]. Every belief serves a function; name it or "the function will reinstall it" [PM-0219, PM-0220]. 2. **Bypass.** Pass the critical faculty through a backdoor [PM-0225]. 3. **Install.** Present tense files as fact, future as hope [PM-0241]; active voice installs agency [PM-0242]. **Negation is invisible**: the deep layer drops the operator [PM-0243, PM-0244, PM-1350]. Concrete images are load-bearing; generic language writes nothing [PM-0246]. Rhythm carries what argument cannot [PM-0247]. "Split manas split the write" [PM-0262]. A sentence installs the world its grammar presupposes [PM-0254]. 4. **Verify.** "The belief that keeps failing the question decays; the belief that keeps passing gets promoted" [PM-0276]. Reality "subsidises true beliefs and taxes false ones" [PM-0277]. 5. **Integrate.** A belief that keeps passing stops being checked and sinks toward identity and perception [PM-0290, PM-0157], rendering "the reality in which its case is obvious" [PM-0292]. ### 1.8 Verification by daily life Much feedback is other people's beliefs, so "does it hold?" often means "do the other believers hold it up?" [PM-0278]. Behaviour is the strongest input: enact a belief and others respond to the enactment [PM-0283, PM-0284]. A slightly threatened identity generates gap-closing behaviour [PM-0280]; announcing an identity before the behaviour drains the drive [PM-0282]; an acted-on belief is justified backward and promoted [PM-0851]. A belief producing no behavioural change "is not installed. It is entertained" [PM-1278, PM-1323]. Beliefs decay by **rendering starvation**: "nothing was refuted; the feeding stopped" [PM-0146]; strongly potentiated structure lasts longest [PM-0147]. Deep reconstructions need "maximal impact, high frequency of it, restructured environment, and deliberate starvation of the old accounts" [PM-0148]. The environment is part of the cognitive loop [PM-0171]; base programming persists because it is environmental [PM-0945], which "is why a weekend seminar does not produce lasting change" [PM-0946]. A room that treats the belief as absurd erodes it [PM-0335]. A narrative containing both poles ("I was broken and I rebuilt") absorbs contradiction; "I have always been strong" breaks [PM-0293, PM-0294]. ### 1.9 Removal, replacement, the unearned, the body Removal without replacement yields "anxiety, disorientation, and vulnerability to the next persuasive thing" [PM-0144, PM-1078]; "dissolution without reinstallation is a wound" [PM-0831]. The good a belief supplied must be re-sourced first [PM-0313, PM-0316]; between supplies lies an "unblanketed interval" [PM-0326]. Meaning handed over unearned does not bind; "verified mana, the kind paid for in tested action, is the expensive kind" [PM-0990, PM-1119]. "The compatibility check runs in the body before it runs in the mind" [PM-1328]. Installation runs through state change, somatic encoding, emotional confirmation and behavioural proof [PM-1340, PM-1342, PM-1343, PM-1345]; assent and affirmations do not install, enactment does [PM-1353]; a somatic install cannot be argued away [PM-1346]. The founding exhibit: Mesmer's theory was false, but "the somatic effects it produced were measurable. Belief engineered the body regardless" [PM-0372, PM-0457]. --- ## 2. Predictions by intervention class ### 2.1 Placebo (concealed) **Mechanism.** A placebo is a render event: pill, procedure and clinician are signals priced into manas feeding "I am being treated and will improve." Blinded tests of Mesmer showed belief, not magnetism, produced the effects, "the first controlled demonstration that belief was the active agent" [PM-0457, PM-0372]. Braid located the effect in the subject's own attention [PM-0458, PM-0459]; Nancy made suggestion "a lever that works on an ordinary patient in an ordinary room" [PM-0460]. **Predictions.** Cues that raise pricing raise the effect: authority [PM-0232, PM-0124], "the uniform licenses the order" [PM-0592], cost and rarity cues [PM-0578], price as the untrained receiver's interpreter [PM-0605]. Conditioning: a neutral stimulus paired with an active one acquires its power, and the learned expectation drives behaviour before thought [PM-0364, PM-0365], so placebo after prior active treatment should beat first-exposure placebo. Effects are largest on felt states (pain, nausea, fatigue, mood), since the render layer is where belief acts [PM-1286, PM-1324], with physiology beyond perception a level-4 extension [PM-0372]. Setting matters: a belief "needs a setting around it as much as it needs a proposition inside it" [PM-0485, PM-0403]. **Moderators.** Priors about medicine and the source [PM-0090, PM-0152]; trust in the clinician [PM-0361]; a deep incompatible belief ("nothing works for me") that outspends the entry [PM-0216, PM-0939]; the indifference collapse, in which the depressed mind prices at actuarial value [PM-0981, PM-0048]. **Durability.** Lasts where daily life verifies it (symptoms improving, others treating the patient as recovering) [PM-0276, PM-0284]; fades by starvation or daily contradiction [PM-0146, PM-0137]. Once "I am improving" is installed, the Prover reads ambiguous bodily signals as improvement [PM-0159, PM-0279], so placebo effects on self-rated outcomes should exceed those on outcomes the patient does not rate. Patients who act on improvement (resume activity) generate proof-behaviour that promotes the belief [PM-0851, PM-1345]. ### 2.2 Open-label placebo The framework holds claims pointing both ways on disclosure. **For an effect despite disclosure:** the believer books renders, not provenance, so taking a pill twice daily is a render whatever the label [PM-0094]; an understood rationale is first run as true [PM-0127]; "understanding the mechanism does not invalidate the output" [PM-0749, PM-0750]; a **vow** survives being seen, "knowing you vowed is the vow" [PM-0272, PM-1194]; ritual, body and conditioning need no proposition [PM-1342, PM-0364]; the lab's own practice runs "with consent and open notes" [PM-0016]. **For a cost of disclosure:** "a fabricated belief that its own holder knows to be fabricated cannot bind" [PM-0826]; a **claim**, a wager on a fact, "dies of transparency" [PM-1193, PM-0271]; naming an operation "reopens the window" of evaluation [PM-0862]; installation "works best when the installer is not watching" [PM-0373]. **Net prediction.** Open-label placebo works through channels that do not rest on "this pill contains a drug": ritual, body, clinician authority and warmth, conditioning [PM-0094, PM-0232, PM-0360, PM-0364]. It loses the portion resting on a checkable claim [PM-1193, PM-0826]. Expect real effects, smaller than concealed placebo at equal authority. The gap narrows when the rationale is framed as a practice to commit to rather than a fact [PM-0272], when it comes from a trusted high-authority source [PM-0124, PM-0361], when the regimen is repeated daily [PM-0102, PM-0104], and when the outcome is a felt symptom [PM-1286]. A rationale inviting the patient to reason about whether sugar can work is first-order argument and wakes the gate [PM-0238]. Negated reassurance ("it contains no drug") writes the negated content [PM-0244]. The lab's own rule for practices run in the open applies: "under open notes, vow rather than claim", and shape the vow as a return rather than a rise, since a story that only climbs "is a prediction the world has to keep" [PM-0271, PM-0272, PM-0273]. **Moderators.** Compatibility with a deep belief that ritual and body matter [PM-0218]. People who hold beliefs as toys they are "too clever to be caught believing" are predicted to have trained themselves out of binding [PM-0825, PM-0828]; strong reasoners entrench existing defences [PM-1122]. ### 2.3 Nocebo **Mechanism.** The same machinery with negative sign, and pricing is asymmetric: threat "reads fastest and weighs heaviest; the ledger is unbalanced on purpose" [PM-0585]. Fear makes threatening information more credible [PM-0845]; emotional priming is "the most reliable bypass of the compatibility check" [PM-0844]. **Predictions.** Because the deep layer drops the negation, "you will not feel much pain" installs pain [PM-0243, PM-0244, PM-1350]. Side-effect lists are vivid, concrete and authoritative, the recipe for a heavy write [PM-0246, PM-0124]. A symptom noticed after "this is strong medicine" is a reversal that outweighs confirmations [PM-0602]. Once "this harms me" is installed, ambiguous bodily signals become confirmation [PM-0159, PM-0279], so monitoring and repeated symptom questioning, each a retrieval that re-books the entry, should grow nocebo [PM-0095]. Shared reports of harm in a group amplify it [PM-0120, PM-0376]. **Moderators.** Anxious or threat-primed receivers [PM-0845, PM-0601]; prior bad experience with the treatment class [PM-0108, PM-0090]; distrust of the source [PM-0141]. **Durability.** Nocebo acted on (stopping a drug, avoiding activity) is justified backward [PM-0851], and avoidance starves the verification that could refute it [PM-0146], so nocebo can outlast the trial. ### 2.4 Hypnosis **Mechanism.** The paradigm backdoor: "when the critical faculty is suspended, beliefs write to deeper layers with greatly reduced resistance" [PM-0023, PM-0369]. Erickson "proved that the critical faculty can be bypassed without the subject knowing it", via metaphor, pacing and misdirection [PM-0370, PM-0371]. The induction is a state change [PM-1340] into the installer's quadrant [PM-0132]. **Predictions.** Suggestion grammar matters: present tense, active voice, concrete images, no negation [PM-0241, PM-0242, PM-0244, PM-0246]. "Your hand is cool and numb as snow" should beat "you will not feel pain." One target per course [PM-0262]. A repeated induction cue becomes a conditioned entry point [PM-0333, PM-0364]; repeated passes deepen the write [PM-1065]; changing the script at the plateau interrupts consolidation [PM-0338]. Self-recorded scripts benefit because the deep layer accepts deposits from an account it recognises as its own [PM-0253]. Effects are expected on render-layer outcomes (pain, itch, gut discomfort) [PM-1286, PM-0086], with Mesmer's measured somatic effects as precedent [PM-0372]. **Moderators.** Authority and rapport of the hypnotist [PM-0232, PM-0360]; compatibility of the suggestion with deep layers [PM-0216]; pitching the target "one floor up", not at a distant apex [PM-0261]; age, since a thin stack writes at high amplitude [PM-0133]; group delivery [PM-0383]. **Durability.** A hypnotic write is provisional until daily life verifies it [PM-0276]. Suggestions the day rarely contradicts hold; those contradicted daily decay by attrition [PM-0137, PM-0270]. Suggestion without daylight action is a named failure: "the Prover has nothing to prove" [PM-0337]. ### 2.5 Psychedelics (psilocybin and related) **Mechanism.** Chemical intervention is listed with trance, ritual and rhythm as a way past the critical faculty [PM-0369]; a molecule acts on "the precision of a belief" [PM-0028]; "psychedelics appear to relax the precision of high-level priors, which is a pharmacological way of describing a belief" [PM-0401]. In framework terms this lowers the "previously installed value" term [PM-0090] and so weakens the compatibility check that normally outspends new entries [PM-0939]. Under psilocybin and DMT default-mode activity falls while experience becomes "vaster and more saturated with significance" [PM-0988]; dosed divinity students mostly reported mystical-type experience under double-blind, active-placebo conditions [PM-0484]. The session is also an extreme impact event: ecstasy and terror write deep [PM-0110], one saturated hour outweighs a season [PM-0092, PM-0093], and recognition that reinterprets one's past, **anagnorisis**, is "the largest minting event a receiver can undergo" [PM-0631]. **Predictions.** - Large acute change, including in identity-level beliefs that argument cannot reach, since an altered state is one of the three named routes to that depth [PM-1076, PM-1075]. - Setting is causal: a belief needs a setting as much as a proposition [PM-0485]; space and music reach deep layers without a proposition [PM-0029, PM-0402, PM-0230]. Therapist authority and trust while the chemical has lowered the gate is the two-doors condition [PM-0126, PM-0361]. - Direction follows what is presented in the window: when conditioning gives way, "whatever is presented next takes hold" [PM-0480], and what produces states on schedule "also lets a person be taken apart on purpose" [PM-0476]. Preparation and in-session content predict the direction of change. - Durability depends on reinstallation: "insight without reinstallation takes an identity apart" [PM-0192, PM-0831], and removal without replacement yields vulnerability [PM-0144]. Unearned meaning does not bind [PM-0990, PM-1119]. Benefits fade by starvation and environmental reinstallation unless verified in daily action and supported by a changed environment [PM-0146, PM-0945, PM-0946, PM-0148]. The site's standing example is Concord, where on follow-up "the real recidivism figure was no better than the norm" [PM-0482]. - Risk: the chaos collapse, finding pattern in everything and ranking none [PM-0049, PM-0824]; total belief-flexibility is linked with dissociation, decision paralysis and conspiracy thinking [PM-1221]. **Moderators.** Depth of the target (deep self-verdicts and addictions are what altered states are said to reach; surface problems gain little over persuasion) [PM-1076, PM-0083]; a replacement structure ready to install, since those who survive dissolution are "already anchored in a structure strong enough to survive being seen through" [PM-0834, PM-0835]; the post-session environment [PM-0946, PM-0284, PM-0335]; intensity of the experience over dose count or duration [PM-0092, PM-0631]; the indifference collapse (depression as meaning idling near zero) [PM-0048], which an intervention raising felt significance addresses directly [PM-0988]. **Blinding.** Because expectation and setting are active causes [PM-0457, PM-0485], much of the recorded drug effect is predicted to run through the render of the experience, and unblinding adds a confirming entry [PM-0138]. ### 2.6 MDMA-assisted therapy The site names no MDMA-specific mechanism. Applying its general mechanics, MDMA reads as acting on the trust and rapport doors: trust disarms the critical faculty [PM-0361], and a person who feels heard accepts what they would reject from a stranger [PM-0360]. Revisiting a memory with full attention is "a genuine deposit, not a replay" [PM-0095], so retrieval under low threat re-books the trauma account at a new price. Trauma was a one-pass write under high arousal [PM-0234, PM-0108]; by the formula it is rebooked only by renders of comparable attention and impact [PM-0090, PM-0103]. Outcomes then depend on the relationship [PM-0232, PM-0361], on replacing the function the trauma belief served [PM-0219, PM-0220], and on post-session verification [PM-0276, PM-0946]. The site endorses trauma medicine's ordering, "safety first, remembrance after" [PM-0312]. ### 2.7 Mindset interventions **Mechanism.** The site's examples are mindset beliefs: a girl told by an adored teacher she has "no head for numbers" stops practising until "her marks oblige" [PM-0004, PM-0005]; a man decides he is "not a morning person" [PM-0006]. These are **self-verdicts**, "constitutive facts in constative clothing" (signed rules that present as facts), "which is why arguing with them fails" [PM-1188, PM-1189]; the remedy is to find the signature and re-sign [PM-1190]. **Predictions.** - A brief module is an argument, one small deposit [PM-0056]: stated attitudes move easily [PM-0080, PM-0972]; identity-level self-verdicts resist [PM-1075, PM-0849]. - A message contradicting a deeper belief is admitted then outspent [PM-0939, PM-0135], and people blame themselves [PM-0951]. Diagnosing the incumbent belief first should beat direct installation [PM-0952, PM-0220]. - Contradiction frequency decides: a line the day rarely contradicts pulls behaviour before it is true [PM-0936, PM-0269]; "I am good at maths" in a class the student fails weekly loses by attrition [PM-0270]. Lines naming the mechanism rather than the result survive bad weeks [PM-0258, PM-0260]. Pitch "one floor up" [PM-0261]. - Enactment beats assent [PM-1353]: interventions requiring behaviour (writing to a future student, practising) should beat message-only ones [PM-0851, PM-1345, PM-0280]. Declaring an identity before the behaviour drains the drive [PM-0282]. - Trusted sources book heavier [PM-0124]; conclusions students draw themselves arrive under their own return address [PM-0630]. **Moderators.** An environment (teachers, parents, peers) that countersigns the new belief [PM-0278, PM-0335, PM-0945]; a thin stack (younger students) [PM-0133]; a target close to current evidence [PM-0261, PM-0936]. Identity-bound old verdicts resist [PM-0848, PM-0145]. **Durability.** "A weekend seminar does not produce lasting change" [PM-0946]; effects decay without repetition or verification by performance [PM-0146, PM-0104]. The installation standard is not absence of setbacks but "a shorter drop, a cleaner floor" [PM-0288]. ### 2.8 Persuasion and belief change **Mechanism.** Persuasion "find[s] what someone already believes, and work[s] it" [PM-0001]; the rally speaker "converts nobody" [PM-0002]. The vectors "map the structure of the receiving system, not the style of the sender" [PM-1074]. **Predictions.** - Depth sets the ceiling: opinions move, identities do not move by argument [PM-1075, PM-0145, PM-0953]; tying a belief to identity gives it identity's resistance [PM-0848]. - Source weight: a confirming message from authority compounds [PM-0138]; a contradicting one from a high-mana source produces perplexity, settled by relative weight, either the source or the belief being written down [PM-0140, PM-0141]. "Prophets are heard only after credibility is banked" [PM-0142]; "an emanator seen hedging transmits nothing" [PM-1183]. - Format: stories lower counter-arguing [PM-0165, PM-0347]; images are absorbed, propositions evaluated [PM-1010]; fluency is judged truer [PM-0596]; repetition installs [PM-0102]; co-authored conclusions bind hardest [PM-0811]; consensus multiplies the entry [PM-0122, PM-0563]; surprise outweighs confirmation [PM-0602]. - Backfire: argue against a paranoid's delusion "and you become evidence for the conspiracy" [PM-0239]; the deeper the installation, the stronger the response to contrary evidence [PM-0894]; stronger reasoners defend harder [PM-1122]. - Inoculation: naming the operation reopens evaluation [PM-0862]; "legitimate offers survive delay. Operations do not" [PM-0854]; detection works only when it reaches direct experience, not as a concept [PM-0868, PM-1068]. - Debunking without replacement leaves the receiver open to the next persuader [PM-0144, PM-1222]. **Moderators.** Prior stance to topic and source [PM-0090, PM-0152]; identity-relevance [PM-0848]; group context [PM-0376]; emotional state at exposure (fear raises credibility of threat, trust raises plausibility) [PM-0845, PM-0847]; the function the belief serves [PM-0219]. **Durability.** Recency governs, so single exposures fade unless repeated [PM-0104, PM-0146]; effects that lead to action are promoted [PM-0851]; a contrary environment erodes them [PM-0945]. ### 2.9 Sleep, hypnagogia, memory reactivation **Mechanism.** The installer's quadrant is the thresholds of sleep [PM-0132]. At the sleep-wake threshold "the conscious mind, the admin layer, has not yet resumed executive control" [PM-0226], which is "why the last voice heard at night matters more than the arguments heard at noon" [PM-0227]. Traditions recite at the hypnagogic threshold [PM-1226, PM-0746]. The site's own practice plays a self-recorded script during **hypnopompia** (waking), behind a fixed drone that becomes a conditioned entry cue [PM-0333, PM-0134]. **Predictions.** - Thresholds, not deep sleep. Depth needs attention [PM-0090, PM-0100]. Deep sleep resembles the drip, where renders are "nearly weightless" and work only by volume [PM-0129]; hidden single exposures "book almost nothing" [PM-0130]. Expect larger belief effects from material at sleep onset or waking than from cues in slow-wave sleep. - Reactivation strengthens what is stored rather than installing new content: each retrieval re-books [PM-0095], and "no render exceeds the asset library" [PM-0096, PM-0097]. Emotionally charged material benefits more, since arousal after learning aids consolidation [PM-0109]. - Cues paired with attentive learning carry the entry [PM-0333, PM-0364]. - Grammar still applies: negated content installs the named content [PM-0244]. - A threshold write is provisional; without daylight action "the Prover has nothing to prove" [PM-0337, PM-0276]. **Moderators.** Long, quiet waking thresholds [PM-0132]; compatibility with deep layers [PM-0216]; one unchanged script across nights [PM-0262, PM-0104]. **Durability.** Strengthened entries survive in proportion to potentiation [PM-0147]; material used in daytime is promoted [PM-0851]; benefits decay if reactivation stops before the entry becomes structure [PM-0104, PM-0061]. ### 2.10 Craving and addiction targets (common in psychedelic and hypnosis trials) **Mechanism.** Desire is "a belief's mana deficiency, the gap between what its imprint demands and what arrives, and the gap widens while it goes unfed" [PM-0321, PM-0872]. A departed influence leaves a vacuum in its own shape [PM-0318], and the vacuum generalises, so a different source can fill it: "a man can trade a drug for a sport and keep the joy the drug was carrying" [PM-0319, PM-0877]. Underneath runs a preference for the original dose, "a groove that knows the old supplier by name" [PM-0878]. Every grip supplies something real, such as courage, company or relief [PM-0313]. **Predictions.** The site's ladder puts restriction before assessment: a detected belief is still a fed belief, and "no assessment runs on a flooded instrument" [PM-0309]; channels must be closed [PM-0310], and every lapse "hands the incumbent another verification" [PM-0311]. Abandoning the influence before re-sourcing its good "collapses you" [PM-0316, PM-0317]. Grief after quitting is "the stage rather than a malfunction" [PM-0329]; "skip the mourning and the friendship resumes by appointment" [PM-0330]. So protocols that pair the intervention with a supplied replacement source, closed channels and a period for grief should show better abstinence than those that deliver an acute experience alone. Early craving that rises before it falls fits the unblanketed interval ("a rough fortnight" at the depth of a small habit) [PM-0326, PM-0327]. ### 2.11 Group delivery (all classes) Group context "dramatically lowers the threshold for belief installation" [PM-0383]; a belief resisted alone is accepted in a group [PM-0376], and synchrony alters experienced reality [PM-0375]. Communal ritual outweighs the same ritual alone [PM-0564]; the heat a group produces is read as contact with something external [PM-0463]. Expect larger acute effects from group delivery, and a steeper fade when the group disperses and stops holding the belief up [PM-0304, PM-0474]. --- ## 3. Turning this into a forecast Protocol features the framework treats as decisive, with the predicted direction: 1. **Depth of the target belief.** Opinions move easily [PM-0080, PM-0972]; cultural programming needs sustained reinforcement [PM-0973]; identity needs an altered state, immersion or crisis [PM-1076]; perceptual outcomes (pain, symptoms) are reachable by renders, not argument [PM-1286, PM-1346]. A method weaker than the target's depth predicts a null [PM-1077, PM-0744]. 2. **Critical-faculty bypass.** Propositions to an alert evaluator pay "the normal tax" [PM-0128]; induction, threshold states, chemicals, music, group, authority or strong emotion write deeper [PM-0023, PM-0225]; two doors beat one [PM-0126]. 3. **Source and setting.** Authority and trust [PM-0124, PM-0232, PM-0361]; room, music, ritual [PM-0403, PM-0485]; cost cues [PM-0578]. Remote, text-only or low-authority delivery predicts smaller effects. 4. **Attention and impact over duration.** No clock [PM-0092]: predict from the intensity of key sessions, not their count [PM-0093, PM-0107]; flat content writes shallow [PM-0110]. 5. **Dose and repetition.** Frequency substitutes for low impact [PM-0103]; recency governs, so late follow-ups shrink unless the belief was verified meanwhile [PM-0104]; one consistent message beats a varied one [PM-0262]; changing content at the plateau hurts [PM-0338]. 6. **Wording.** Present tense, active, concrete, no negation [PM-0241, PM-0242, PM-0244, PM-0246]; negated reassurance predicts nocebo-type backfire [PM-0243]; check presupposed worlds [PM-0254]. 7. **Compatibility.** Predict the average from the share of participants whose deeper layers contradict the target [PM-0216, PM-0939]; priors toward treatment and source multiply [PM-0090]; recruiting believers raises effects [PM-0138]. 8. **Verification by daily life**, the strongest durability predictor. How often will the ordinary day file against the belief [PM-0137, PM-0936]? Does the protocol require evidence-producing action [PM-1353, PM-0851]? Does the environment countersign or contradict [PM-0945, PM-0335]? Without verification, predict fade [PM-0146]. 9. **Replacement.** Removing a belief without supplying its function predicts relapse or destabilisation [PM-0220, PM-0144, PM-0316]; integration and practice raise durability [PM-0990]. 10. **Open versus concealed.** Concealed keeps the claim channel; open-label loses the wager and keeps ritual, body and vow [PM-1193, PM-0272, PM-0094]. Predict open below concealed at equal authority, the gap narrowed by practice framing, authority, repetition and felt-symptom outcomes [PM-0232, PM-0102, PM-1286]. 11. **Group versus individual.** Larger acute effects, steeper fade on dispersal [PM-0383, PM-0564, PM-0474]. 12. **Outcome measure.** Things "satisfy the way they were declared, not the way they were predicted" [PM-0289]: an adjacent outcome may move instead of the named one. Self-reported belief without behaviour is entertained, not installed [PM-1278, PM-1323]; expect larger effects on self-report than behaviour, and on felt symptoms than biomarkers [PM-0086, PM-0372]. 13. **Responders.** More: high trust in the deliverer [PM-0360, PM-0361]; thin stack on the topic [PM-0133]; compatible deep beliefs [PM-0218]; high emotional engagement [PM-0601]; supportive environment afterward [PM-0945]; target not yet identity-bound [PM-0848]. Less: identity-bound targets [PM-0145]; people who hold beliefs as disposable toys [PM-0825, PM-0828]; the indifference collapse for meaning-pricing mechanisms other than psychedelics [PM-0048, PM-0988]; strong reasoners on identity-linked targets [PM-1122]. 14. **Follow-up timing.** The unblanketed interval can produce a dip before improvement [PM-0326]; consolidation can look like a plateau [PM-0338]. Early follow-ups favour impact-driven effects [PM-0092]; late ones favour protocols with built-in verification and environmental support [PM-0276, PM-0946]. **In short.** The framework expects success and durability when a study aims no deeper than its method reaches. It should pass the critical faculty through at least one backdoor and deliver one concrete, present-tense message from a trusted source in a charged setting. It should repeat that message and require action that the participant's environment will countersign. It expects failure when a brief argument meets an identity-level belief in an alert, sceptical participant, nothing is asked of daily life, and the outcome is measured weeks later in an environment that reinstalls the old account [PM-1075, PM-0128, PM-0946, PM-0146].
